I saw this happen. I was at school, in chemistry class, about 15 miles away. We were in a 3 story building. The first shock wave shook the building, we all looked out the window, and you could see the smoke plume, 15 miles away. A few minutes later, we saw the mushroom cloud go up with the second explosion. It took a minute for the sound to get to us.
My dad worked in construction at the time, and it was great for business--all of the houses in Henderson needed new windows, doors, drywall work, etc. etc. etc.
We were there when this happened, as well. We were in North Las Vegas, about 40 miles away. I don't remember seeing it in person, but I remember watching it on the news all day. It's crazy how you can see the shock wave roll across the ground.

I was 11 years old at the time and I never heard peep .... I must have been too busy playing in the ditch that week.
