a fish story

This past weekend my grandpa took the kids fishing. It is something he has been doing the past 7 years. My kids still ask him every time when are they going to go.
This was the first year that Katanya really enjoyed it. She would throw the line in and wait for the fish. When one bit the hook she hollered with delight. She needed a little help at the end getting it out of the water. She wasn't sure if she wanted to get too close while it was still wiggling.
Cruz was the serious one. His faces were priceless. This was the first year he wasn't afraid of them. It always amazes me how much he looks like Jacob (from what I have seen through pictures).
This picture was just too priceless not to post, although it didn't resemble anything about Kirsten's fishing trip.
She went around wanting to pet every fish that was caught. I think she was trying to show me that fish aren't that gross. (I hate (HATE) touching fish.)She even played with the worms. And her very last fish she carried it with her finger through the gill to go get cleaned. Jacob promised her something if she would do this. I still think he hasn't paid up. Kirsten is my counter and I'm sure she won't forget.
McKay's the pro. This was her first year of holding a fish as well. My girls are tough!
I think next year I am going to made her bait and hook (and de-hook) her own fish.

when we're helping we're happy and we learn as we go....

....for we like to help grandpa, for we all love him so.

This weekend the kids had a couple days off of school so we went down to Utah to do a couple things with Grandpa that we normally do during the summer. Although with the first frost already happening a few days before the grapes were ready to be picked. So Friday morning, we found ourselves going back to childhood memories. I remember my parents always picking grapes we would sit there and pick the grapes off of the stems while we listened to conference. Jacob also mentioned memories of him picking grapes as a child.
I found it rather fun and relaxing. We went through three separate vines. What my dad worried about taking him days took less than one and we had memorable family time.Of course, the kids were playing monkeys in the trees.

an old hobby

Cruz has bugged me for MONTHS and MONTHS for a pair of tractor pajamas. It's not like sewing is hard, it was just on the bottom of my list. So after 11 months, I finally pulled out my sewing machine and surger again. After last year's Halloween project, I burned myself out and hid them away in the back of my closet. When Betsy was here, we took a trip to the fabric store. This is always a mistake for me. I find too many cute fabrics, and have too many ideas. Now I have a stack of projects that have been sitting on my counter for 6 weeks. This stack is also on my to-do list (the list I made after seeing Betsy's. I only want to cross off a couple things a week but so far, I've been very productive.)This week is the week for sewing.
Cruz got his pajamas last night. I even added the applique to the shirt to make it complete. He is in heaven! He even got a second pair of dinosaur pajamas. It's too easy to make him happy.
P.S. For the record, I'm not making - sewing Halloween costumes this year.

Bending over backwards

McKay had her skit today as well as voting. They didn't tell the "elects" the results before school let out as they hadn't finished tallying. Later, I got a telephone call while she was at activity days and....she made it. I also called her best friend's mom and she was elected president. These two are inseparable. (They have their whole future planned out......or so they think.)

P.S. She doesn't know yet. I missed the first phone call and luckily the called my cell phone. I only told her I missed the phone call to the house and she is upset I didn't "run" for the phone. She doesn't get computer priveledges until her homework is done so we will see how long it takes her.

lifesize

Advancing to the General Election, meant two more posters. The PR (dad) opted on one. One LIFESIZE poster that is.
All for a sixth grade election..... I can't wait to see what Jr. High and High School brings.
It was a brillant idea! Elections got moved to next Tuesday. McKay needs to come up with a skit / speech and then the rest is up to the school. (Kirsten is holding her vote over McKay's head for "niceness". Sisters are so great!)

where were you on 9/11?

....on our honeymoon! We had just made it to Glacier National Park on September 10th, 2001. I was sick the whole day with an upset stomach and had not been able to keep anything down. The morning of September 11th, we woke up and finding myself starving I asked Jake to run down to the kitchen and get the free breakfast. Jacob wasn't too happy with me because it was not the way a honeymoon was suppose to be.

As Jacob went downstairs their was a crowd gathered around a 4" TV. Because we were inside the park, no TV's were in any of the hotels. The twin towers had been hit. He ran upstairs to explain the news. The rest of the day we went to the lounge (where there was one bigger TV) and watched the news. It was the first time I had been separated from McKay and I missed her a lot. I ran up quite the phone bill calling her everyday that week. We did enjoy the rest of our honeymoon but someday I would love to go back up there and really enjoy the beauty that we got distracted from.

I count my blessings all the time and I am glad to live in a free country!

Presents and Cake

-Happy Happy Birthday-We had a fun day today. I don't think I could have done anything else to make his day. Although he won't ever know it but he made mine 10x better than his was.

Presents:
Walkie Talkies, (with a 22 mile range, we tested it up to 3 miles today on a quick four wheeler ride. We went to our old house and clear up the hills on the dirt road to the top. Clear as if we were next to each other. We will have to do a farther test next time) a NERF gun with extra ammo, Webkinz, a new bag, a book, and money. Now all the girls want stuff that he got for Christmas.

Dinner:
He chose french bread pizza (that he made himself), grapes and cold corn (cold veggies started in Texas at Betsy's house for us).
He wanted to pick his cake from the store. I was game for anything. Although homemade cake is tastier, sometimes fast things work too!

Cruz is such a sweetheart. He loves working next to his dad and still playing with his sisters. He has a fear for bugs which we are gradually getting by this day by day as we work out by the grasshoppers and other insects.
We Love you Cruz!

Happy Number 5

Our boy turns 5 today. He has waited so long for his birthday as it is the last one in the year. He told me one thing that sounded so sweet this morning. It was "It's my birthday mom, and no one can work on my birthday." Working the past 3 weeks moving trees has really worn me out. It's all I needed to hear. He wants to pick his own cake out with toys on top so we are off to town and a day of fun! We'll keep you posted.

P.S. Cruz is a lady's man. He held Hazel's hand everywhere in Texas. He also holds the girls' hands in primary. On our way to Texas, he informed me he had already kissed his friend. We had to have a "little" talk about that right then and there. I'm afraid what is going to happen when he gets older.

8 on the 8th

It was 8 years on September 8th for us. I was going to use one of our wedding pictures, but I didn't for a couple reasons. When you have a 6:20 a.m. wedding, you don't get a lot of sleep and for some silly reason you can tell we are very tired in our pictures.
Yesterday as I worked along side, still moving trees, I thought about our wedding day a lot. Another reason it's so special is McKay was sealed to us. I remember her running around our house at four in the morning that she was going to go to the temple. She was only 2 1/2 but she knew the temple was a special place. We had been there often. I am very glad I found a special man that wanted both of us in his life. Love you!

It's meant to be....running for V.P.

Last Wednesday, McKay announced her campaign to run for Vice President. There was four people running. Her best friend, Alexia is running for president. McKay, her campaign manager, and her PR (public relations - also known as dad) came up with these great posters. The PR printed them out to be poster paper size. Everybody was impressed.
Primary Elections were held last Friday where only the 6th graders vote. It took it down to two people for each office. McKay's name was announced first with second place coming in as a three way tie. (I still can't believe that happened.) They voted again without McKay and now General Elections are this week where the whole school will vote on Friday. Go McKay! (Her best friend also made it through.)

our working week

One week of school down and 39 more to go, but who's counting? Actually it's been pretty nice and easy with the kids in school. They are happy and enjoy every minute. I can't wait until Jacob is back in school either. He is just happier when he is there. This week was a crazy one. We had moved trees Tuesday through Thursday. On Friday we were in the dump trucks hauling more shredded bark in. Halfway through the day, we got a call saying McKay had a bloody nose and a bloody eye. Being stuck close to Rexburg in the dump truck, I called: a good friend who lived in Rexburg, the doctor, and made it to the school to still have to stop the bloody nose. It turns out (from what the nurse said at my pediatrician's office) that the tear duct is connected to your sinus so as long as it wasn't "gushing" out of the eye and the eye wasn't discolored that she was okay (we also had to watch her the rest of the day.) What had happen was her eye would fill up in the corner and she would actually "cry" blood. I didn't actually see this as it had stopped before I arrived. So this is what it looks like after working all day on Saturday. We are only "healing" (covering with bark) in the poplars as we move them for now so it should go a lot faster and quicker in the next week. Hopefully by tomorrow at noon the poplars will be finished. We are on a deadline as Jacob starts school on September 10th and I don't want to be stuck doing this by myself. There were a few questions in the comments last time that I will try to answer. Back in 2007 we got a permit to remove the topsoil and open a tree farm / nursery. The last two years we have planted over 10,000 trees and shrubs to grow and sale. The pit is the way it is for a couple reasons.

  1. It's easier to water them. No weeds and no mud.
  2. It's a barrier from the terrible Idaho wind and snow.
  3. The topsoil funded the nursery with in hopes that the nursery will eventually fund itself.

Click for one of the posts from the past on planting.

a long haul

This is our pit. Some people don't like it, some do. It's finally flat and ready for the trees and shrubs to be moved up here. So for the next two weeks, this is our project. It should be rather simple. BUT....
This is where the trees were put last year after they were planted. We had a temporary water system set up and they were supposed to be upfront last fall. Our plans didn't work out that way. One bonus is the weeds kept the plants shaded. So Jacob and I have been inching our way back little by little. We got roughly 300 moved today. With the poplars, we have to prune them as we go. Hopefully the other trees and shrubs won't take so long. There is still a big space to fill.

sixth and second graders

This summer flew by so fast. School started today. It is the last year that McKay and Kirsten will be in the same school together. (sniff sniff) They chose their favorite colors to wear. McKay wanted a pair of Converse this year and after Kirsten saw them last night she wants a pair now too. McKay followed after Aspen's footsteps.
Kirsten is a second grader this year. She has always had a passion for school. She loves pink. She wanted her whole wardrobe pink but that wasn't really possible. After shopping for four hours on Saturday we were finally able to find a pair of shoes (for PE) in her size and that we (her and I) both liked. I started shopping in Texas for school supplies and backpacks but then I got home and things were crazy and busy again. I really should learn not to leave it to the last minute!McKay is in the 6th grade. Two years ago our district pulled 6th grade back into the elementary school. I was so happy about this. 10 years old is a little young (even though she is really smart) for Jr. High. McKay loves blue. She didn't want anything pink this year. If she had it her way she would throw everything pink that was in her closet away. McKay never has been a morning person (a little like me) and so her smile is a little off. (Did I mention that after we got them off to school that Jake and I went back to bed ourselves. The other kids were still asleep and it had been raining all day and night so it was too muddy to do the work we needy to outside. We also stayed up too late. We need to evaluate our schedule as well.)Another bonus about the school is the bus stop is right in front of our house. It couldn't get any better. It's good to see that as sister's they can still get along, talk, and be friends. (McKay's smile looks a lot better.)
The girls were happy when they got home. They both had homework and plenty of papers for me to read. I think I am ready for this again. It's nice to have a schedule. I'm already planning the pre-school I am going to do with Cruz and Katanya this year. Now everything would be great if it could stay good weather for a lot longer than usual.

angels from heaven

Last weekend we went down to Utah. Betsy was going down for the next week so we caravaned with her. We also stopped and visited with Erika and her new "very sweet" baby. Victor is a content baby. I wish I would have snapped some pictures but I didn't. Hopefully when we are down in a couple weeks I will be able to do that. Back to visiting, we got a chance to relax and talk with Erika, Felipe, Hannah, and Maddy. I really miss seeing everyone and want to keep in touch more often. I was sad when we had to leave so soon because our schedule was jammed pack with events. My brother blessed his baby on Sunday. He is a new proud daddy. This little girl has him wrapped around her finger so tight. Olivia is now a month old and 7 1/2 pounds.
As McKay was holding her on Sunday she looked over and said, "Mom, just one more.....pleasssssee?" I don't think she is ever going to give up.

It's my birthday...

Happy 7th Birthday Kirsten! This is Kirsten three years ago, when she was four. This is Kirsten today, seven years old. She still looks the same but she is bigger and has more sass and attitude.
Shopping for her this year was harder than shopping for Jake. If that is possible? Kirsten wanted simple things for her birthday. A diary with a lock and a Webkinz. Simple enough right? We also knew a few other things that she had mentioned wanting the past couple months, like a bathrobe, that we thought we would get her as well.. Yesterday I shopped for six hours looking for these things. All I found was a small toy diary that looked like it would break the first time you tried to unlock it, and no bathrobe. I guess bathrobes are Christmas items from what everyone told me. I went to every single clothing store in Idaho Falls looking for one. As I was in Wal-Mart picking up a few things for her "pie" that she wanted, I ran into a neighbor. I was telling her my dilemma when she suggested since you can't lock the journal, why not get her something she can put it in that locks. That's when the light went on. (If you haven't noticed by now that I lack the creative genes.) We got her a lock box for her journal, money and whatever she wants to put in there. It has a set of keys and also an electronic code. She loved it. As for the bathrobe, I actually came up with the idea of making her one and letting her pick out the fabric. So I found a pattern and that took care of that. Kirsten was thrilled with her presents. Kirsten also wanted a pumpkin pie for her birthday cake. It was as easy as....

PIE.

We love you Kirsten!

Lava Hot Springs

Today we went to Lava Hot Springs. We've only been one other time as a family at that was with Betsy (again) in 2003.All the kids enjoyed the old slides (that were they last time), plus the new slides that they have recently added.
We packed lunch and a lot of snacks that I think we could have stayed there for a full 24 hours and been fine. Food always keeps the kids happy. And like last time, we attempted the top platform (10 meters)....
....and I screamed all the way down.

color palette

While I was gone to Texas, Jake would wear a shirt to school (or church) and leave it in a laundry basket. When I came come he informed me that he would continue doing this until he was out of shirts and then send them out to be laundered and pressed. I quickly counted up the shirts and did the math in my head and realized that I better invest in a good iron, board, and have Betsy teach me how to "quality" iron to meet Jake's expectations.

After working on these for 10 days straight I finally finished. (Three of them ironed twice because he wore them before I was done.)

How many shirts? 55. At least one of every color. I am positive that Jake has more clothes than I do. My next ironing project, his slacks.

"My dad is better than your dad...."

Nate surprised Betsy this weekend and flew up to spend it with his family. I'm sure you can imagine by this picture how much fun was had. As Nate got ready to leave Sunday morning, Cruz came to him and said, "Nate, I want you to stay longer." Nate told him, "I can't. I have to go to work tomorrow."

Cruz's response was, "My dad has work and he quits when he wants too."

If only it was that simple.

mud baths

Yes, we finally made it back to Idaho. It's taken me a couple days to get back with it and realize what goes where in my own house. So while we enjoyed a week and I haven't posted anything about it (highlights will come later this week) we have been enjoying the nice cool Idaho weather. The kids decided to take mud baths yesterday.
Lots of water + lots of dirt = lots of fun! The did this last year, but I think they forgot one thing........How cold it is when you get off after with well water. Cruz wasn't the only one that screamed. All five of the older kids did. The littler kids played on the safe side and made mud balls.
